Company: Hoxton Farms

Location: London, UK

Founding year: 2020

CEO/Founder: Ed Steele & Max Jamilly

Tech summary
Hoxton Farms is using a combination of cell biology and mathematical modelling to grow real animal fat in the lab. The company is building a team of interdisciplinary scientists across computational, wet lab and engineering roles – utilising mathematical modelling to develop cost-effective production processes. Hoxton Farms will supply cultivated fat to plant-based meat manufacturers enabling meat alternatives that resemble the real thing.

History
The product of a longstanding friendship, Hoxton Farms founders and childhood friends Ed and Max partnered in 2020, bringing together backgrounds in mathematical modelling and synthetic biology. Driven by a love of food, they envisaged disrupting the plant-based protein industry and beyond by providing customisable and realistic tasting fats. Currently, meat substitutes rely on plant oils which fail to measure up to meat fats in terms of flavour and sensory properties – Hoxton Farms wants to change this.

Vision and progress
Our current food systems rely heavily on large-scale animal production making it hard for people to actively change their food to align with their ethical preferences. Hoxton Farms seek to empower consumers with realistic meat substitutes using alternative and sustainable methods. The company is growing and hiring rapidly - Head of Growth, Katherine Uhlman, would like to encourage people passionate about food and flavour to look into the roles on offer.
